Hudibras Restoration

The cover material is undyed calf, which I coloured and sprinkled with leather dyes. The front and back cover are blind tooled, while the spine and board edges are gilded using the direct tooling technique.

A restoration of Samuel Butler’s Hudibras, with illustrations by William Hogarth. Published in 1726, the paper was in good condition apart from some minor tears and insect damage. However, the sewing was failing and a large section in the middle had become detached. I decided to rebind it in an 18th century Cambridge panel calf binding.
