Jackanapes Repair

Jackanapes, 1884, by Juliana Horatia Ewing. Illustrated by Randolph Caldecott.

The cloth spine of this case binding had some holes and was torn along the hinge. The paper was very worn, especially at the edges, exposing boards and spine cloth.

The text block was coming loose from the back board because the endpaper was detached from last section.

The text block was resewn after tears were mended and the outer folios of each signature guarded. Interior hinges of Japanese tissue were added.

The original spine cloth was removed and discarded. A new piece of spine cloth was made with sized muslin and toned with Golden fluid acrylic paint to match the remaining original cloth on the covers. The edges of the boards were reinforced with toned Japanese tissue. Losses elsewhere on the board were filled with the same tissue.
